Okay, I finally watched the "sneak preview" of Press Your Luck from Tue night but haven't seen the "premiere" Wed episode so here's my synopsis (by grades and comments) a bit similar to manekineko's:
THE SET--A+! I absolutely loved how they replicated the board and even better if you noticed, when the screens were changing, they were smooth transitions instead of hard cuts like Whammy did on GSN. Everything was digitzed of course, but they had the earned/passed portion, the "SPINS" at the top, job well done!
THE HOST--C. I'm going to give host Elizabeth Banks the benefit of the doubt because it was the "pilot" and sometimes you can be a bit nervous delivering. I felt she kind of "forced" her dialogue and wasn't relaxed enough. She did a decent job of reading the questions and rooting the contestants on but I really liked how she performed in the bonus round becoming more personable and excited during the spins as the money added up. I'll see how she fares in Wed's episode.
THE MUSIC--A. There's a gentleman on YouTube called Javan H. who did a remix of the original PYL theme using computer graphics and such. The theme on ABC's is extremely similar oddly enough and very cool! Obviously you can't copy the original but this remix does the trick for us classic PYL fans.
THE BOARD--A+! I didn't get to exactly examine all the squares to comment but the dollar amounts are fine for both rounds and they through in those weird amounts ($1,505, $4,040, etc) ala the $470 days. As I pointed out the transitions were smooth while the squares were in motion and the board music reminded me of the 2nd board sound on the original PYL but with the "soft" sound of the very 1st board sound from '83. No problem there.
THE GAMEPLAY--B. Just like classic PYL the contestants answered questions in Round 1 and Round 2 going to the board. But why only three questions in Round 1 compared to four on the original and Whammy??? My biggest complaint was when the multiple choices were read, they didn't reveal them on screen!!! That made me upset because both classic PYL and Whammy showed them so why not this version? Other than that, it went well.
THE ANNOUNCER--B-. If you hadn't figured, the announcer is Neil Ross (in credits but it was faint) who used to promote the game shows/lineup on Game Show Network back in the 90's to mid 2000's. I felt he could have been more enthusiastic but I did like how he read off the contestant's prizes after the bonus round. Speaking of:
THE BONUS ROUND--C. It's a cool concept but it took too long and reminded me of Deal or No Deal where the contestant had to "take" a number of spins and could not stop until the round had ended. What I did like though was that the prize package catered to the contestants' needs so you know if they landed on a prize, they would really enjoy it. And Banks as I mentioned earlier, did a nice "Howie-like" job of explaining the rules and cheering on the contestant. The introduction of the contestant's spouse though dragged so it was very similar to DOND. But that's why the show is a whole hour.
THE WHAMMIES--A+! The animator did an outstanding job recreating the old Whammy look and of course added new ones like the "Bachelor Whammy", "Oprah Whammy", etc. They even brought the "Jackhammer" Whammy from classic PYL and modified him a bit. They made me laugh a bit and I loved it!
Overall, I would give ABC's version a B. There will never be game shows the same like the 70's and 80's but the way ABC made this version was enjoyable minus my nitpicks but it was fun to watch and they did a good job.
Sorry if this was too wordy but I wanted to give my insight.
