I don't see a thread about this show, so I thought I would create one .
University Challenge is a British quiz show, which, as the title suggests, is played by university students. It first started way back in 1962 - and it remains popular today, over half a century later.
The format is very simple. Each participating university enters a team of four students, with two teams competing against each other on each episode. Contestants are asked two types of questions: 'starter questions', and 'bonus questions':
That's really it . The entire programme consists of starter questions on the buzzer, each followed by three bonus questions for the team that answers correctly. Whoever has the most points at the end of the episode wins the game!
Back when the show started in 1962, Bamber Gascoigne was the host. Here's a clip of him from a very early episode (the format was a little different back then - the bonus was a single 4-part question worth 40 points - but the starter question was worth the same 10 points that it is today ):
Bamber continued to host the show until 1987, when it was cancelled due to low ratings. However, it was brought back in 1994, this time with Jeremy Paxman asking the questions (and he still holds this role today, meaning that both of them have hosted the show for 25 years each: an impressive tenure for both of them!)
So, is anyone here a fan of this?

- Starter questions are asked on the buzzer, and each correct answer earns 10 points (an incorrect answer loses 5 points, but only if the contestant had buzzed in before the host finished reading the question).
- Whenever a contestant gets a starter question right, they earn three bonus questions for their team (each worth 5 points). These aren't on the buzzer, and all four team members can confer before giving their answer.
