This is the first time a host died while his show was still in production since Ray COmbs on Family CHallenge on the Family Channel in 1996. Michael Burger hosted that show's second season.

I saw this news on Twitter while I was on break at work earlier today and I'm still in shock. I still can't believe he's gone. Cancer can go F itself. RIP Alex Trebek. You'll be missed.

This one hit me more than any other host.
I grew up with Trebek's wry humor, saw him on shows like Pitfall, The New Battlestars, High Rollers, To Tell The Truth and Classic Concentration, but it was Jeopardy! where he found his home for over 36 years. Sometimes he'd be there hosting and inspiring millions to come up with the correct questions to answers.
I think secretly everyone loved Jeopardy! just because you could pick up and play. Even if you didn't like game shows, the show and its contestants gave the game new life without gimmicks or fancy features. The answers were given and it was pure knowledge.
I had the honor of going to a taping in 1994. Alex was very much unlike his stage persona on the show. He was actually very jovial and fun and I had the honor of getting my ticket signed. For decades, he was everyone's beacon of intelligence.
The show transcended generations, race, gender, creed or disability. I remember at a concert in 2019 I went to see Liliac and I started singing the theme to Jeopardy! and the singer Melody said to me "that is exactly what I was thinking right now, you read my mind", I would do this again in January with a band called Triple Triggers and people were singing along while the band was trying to fix things. That's how much of an impact the game had on not just the United States but I believe the world.
The last time I saw Jeopardy! since I don't have an antenna for my TV was during the GOAT tournament. When I saw Alex Trebek struggling to walk back to the podium, that's when I knew something was wrong and I should start mourning at that time, but given how awful 2020 has been in general, I was kinda hoping 2020 would show enough mercy to let him live through 2021.
He will be missed. The question is: Should Jeopardy! continue without him? I'm going to go against the grain and say yes. The show is too important in Americana to end. But the next host better do well enough and make the show his own. It needs a person who is compassionate when needed but also stern when needed.
The last Trebek-hosted show will air on Christmas Day 2020. I can only imagine how many people will tune in to say goodbye to a legend.

I wonder if Johnny Gilbert will decide to retire in the wake of this or continue on? He is currently doing the announcing from his home, as Jim Thornton is for WOF.

I'm going to say this right now. I've seen the short list of 7 people who could take over for Alex Trebek, and I honestly would either like to see Levar Burton or Alex Faust host. The other name I think would work is Emily Trebek, Alex's 27 year old daughter. The show could go another 40-50 years with her at the helm.

ngl, I'm still really heartbroken over this and it's been a week. Alex was one of my favorite hosts, he had the right amount of wit and sophistication to carry any show he's ever done.
I fell really behind with Buzzr's airings of Classic Concentration and I've got well over 200 episodes to catch up on. I'm going to save all of them and any additional episodes that we might see until after Christmas when his last Jeopardy episode airs, so I can have as much fresh material with him to watch as possible.
