When I was a kid my mom and I had a afternoon routine where we would watch Supermarket Sweep every day on the Lifetime Channel in the 90's while eating our lunch and Mom and I would always dream of being contestants and I always dreamed that Mom and Dad would be a good team on Supermarket Sweep and win the Big Sweep and now today Mom and I still like Supermarket Sweep and I always wondered why Supermarket Sweep reruns haven't been added to GSN's lineup or a new remake of Supermarket Sweep could be a hit today. Supermarket Sweep is truly one of the classic game shows that was really fun and exciting and Johnny Gilbert and Randy West were terrific announcers, Who remembers Supermarket Sweep?, Kelsey

I liked it too but wasn't it on at night? After school for me. I think I watched the Sweep/STYD combo numerous times when I was younger.

I sure wish that GSN would get the rights for Supermarket Sweep because it would be great to add to their lineup and Supermarket Sweep also had fun mini games like the Round Robin game and the 10 Second Sweep was so cool as well and the host David Ruprecht brought humor to Supermarket Sweep and really made the game fun. It's a shame you don't hear much about David Ruprecht anymore because Supermarket Sweep really made him a star in the game show world. Is David Ruprecht still alive or did he retire from Supermarket Sweep after PAX TV cancelled the show?, Kelsey

David Ruprecht is still alive.
I didn't get to see much of the original run on Lifetime as we didn't have cable at the time, but I always looked forward to watching it when I went to an aunt's house. Watched it on PAX religiously. I wish someone would air reruns. I've found it to be a really solid show that's aged well when seeing it on YouTube.

When I was looking though Mom's book The Television Years you'll never guess what I read about. I learned about the original Supermarket Sweep that aired in the 1960's and it was so wonderful and it was so neat and ABC was the original station that was home to Supermarket Sweep. I don't remember when in the 60's it aired but it was in the 60's chapter of The Television Years. I can't believe that Supermarket Sweep was such an old game show and that it inspired the 90's version that I saw as a kid, Who remembers the 1960's Supermarket Sweep?, Kelsey

I don't remember it, but I knew someone who mistook the new Supermarket Sweep for the old one

I'm too young to have seen it offhand originally but I've seen an episode on YouTube. It's not bad and is a pretty fun watch.

It's like The Price is Right before it became how we know it today

When I would watch Supermarket Sweep as a kid I learned an interesting fact and I want to know if it was true? After each season of Supermarket Sweep would be finished Supermarket Sweep would donate the groceries {Even the groceries won by contestants} to a charity or a soup kitchen and the contestants would be paid money for their donation. Was this really done due to David Ruprecht being really active in charities?, Kelsey

I read an interview about a week or two ago, and they said that some of the items were fake. (Meats.)

The groceries by contestants were never won by the contestants. They got a cash equivalent (for instance, if they got $687 in groceries, their total cash was $687) and you're correct that the groceries were in fact donated to food banks, probably after taping a handful of episodes, not just at the end of a season.

Yeah, that was a funny bit is a long interview about the show. Seems that the meats were getting too messy after a while, even with heavy refrigeration. So they had to use fake stuff for some of the items. They tried to weight them the same as real items.

This is a little bit belated, but Thursday, February 5th, 2015 marked the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Supermarket Sweep with David Ruprecht, which premiered February 5, 1990 on Lifetime and lasted for over 1,000 episodes, becoming one of the longest-running and most successful cable game shows ever. This was a childhood favorite of mine, and it's hard to believe that the Ruprecht version premiered a quarter of a century ago. It's too bad GSN hasn't picked it up yet for airing. I know that Shop Til You Drop kind of was a ratings disappointment, but I wish that GSN would consider giving Sweep a chance on the schedule someday.
Quite frankly I (and many others I know) was of the opinion that Supermarket Sweep was always superior to STYD, and I was kind of disappointed that GSN decided to acquire STYD last year rather than Supermarket Sweep.
