Week of August 10, 1987 (originally slated to air July 13-17, 1987):
The guests were Lara Jill Miller of "Gimme a Break" and Harry Waters Jr. of "What a Country." This was the first visit for both celebrities. It would be the only appearance for Lara Jill, which was somewhat of a surprise, as she proved to be quite good at the game. Harry had some bad luck his first week, but overall, he played pretty well and would make one more appearance in November.
New player Stephanie won both games on Monday. Lara Jill guided her to $10,000 in the first round when they got THINGS YOU PRACTICE with one second left on the clock. In the second round, Stephanie and Harry scored $350, during which Harry got buzzed on $150 box FATTENING FOODS for saying "Seafood soufflé."
Harry and Stephanie won the first game on Tuesday, and it looked for a second like they had won $10,000, but as the last box turned, Dick shouted, "Stop!" And for good reason: On $50 box CHRISTMAS THINGS, Harry had clearly started to say part of "Christmas," but the judge didn't catch it right away. Word must have gotten to the booth, though, because rather than the victory music playing when the last box turned, there was a quick ding followed by a buzzer. Dick explained the situation to everyone after the commercial, and it was announced that Stephanie had won $1,000 and not $10,000. Harry and newcomer Greg tried to match that in the next round but stopped at $750, missing top box THINGS ON A WALL.
Both games on Wednesday ended in 21-21 ties, both broken by Harry and his partners. In the first Winner’s Circle, again it looked like Harry and Stephanie had won the $10,000. However, on top box THINGS YOU PLAN, Harry said "Your day ahead," and even though the judge had sounded the buzzer right after Stephanie said the right answer, it must not have been heard clearly in the studio, because Harry and Stephanie jumped up and hugged and the board was blinking as if they had won. Dick stopped them both and explained that Harry's clue was too descriptive, so Stephanie had won only $750. In the next round, Dick announced that for the Mystery 7, they were giving away a pony: a 1987 Ford Escort Pony. Stephanie won the car, which eased the loss of the $10,000 somewhat. After a series of heartbreaks, Harry finally had a big win when new contestant Kyle won $10,000 on THINGS YOU FOLLOW.
Lara Jill got back to the Winner’s Circle in Thursday's first round, and she guided new player Debbie to $10,000. The last category was CRISP THINGS. Harry and Debbie almost had a $25,000 win in the second round, but Harry got buzzed on $250 box THINGS YOU CHOOSE for saying "Your path in life."
On the last day of the week, Harry and Debbie won the first game, and after clearing the rest of the board, they only had four seconds left to work on top box PERSONAL THINGS. Harry couldn't even get a clue out before the buzzer rang, and given his bad luck in the Circle all week, his first reaction was "What did I do now?!" Lara Jill and Debbie wrapped up the week with a $300 win, and Debbie would return the following week.
Tallies for the week: Lara Jill - 3 games, $22,500; Harry - 7 games, $27,700.
Week of August 17, 1987 (originally slated to air July 20-24, 1987):
The celebrity players were Lauri Hendler and Stuart Pankin of "Not Necessarily the News." They had been opponents on the nighttime version earlier in the year. This would be Lauri's last visit to any version of "Pyramid."
Lauri and the new player, Kathy, won the first game on Monday. They didn't fare that well in the Circle, winning only $300. Lauri and returning champ Debbie won the second game, and after Debbie went back and guessed $250 box THINGS THAT ARE SUPPORTED with one second left on the clock, it looked like she had won the $10,000. However, Dick Clark intervened and asked to go to a commercial. When they returned, Dick said that he was worried that Lauri's clue of "Red China" might have been unacceptable for $150 box COMMUNIST COUNTRIES, but the judge said it was okay, so the win stood. This was the third time in a few weeks that Dick stopped a win celebration because of a possible judgment call.
Lauri and newcomer Colette won the first game and scored $500. Lauri and Debbie tied that mark in the second round, meaning both contestants would return the next day. Interestingly, they both scored the $500 in different configurations: Colette got the first four boxes, while Debbie got the first box and the two boxes on the middle row.
In Wednesday's first round, Stuart made his first visit to the Winner’s Circle this week, and he and Debbie scored $500. She achieved this in yet another configuration, getting the first, third, and sixth boxes. In her last try in the Winner’s Circle, Debbie won $300 with Lauri. She left undefeated after five days with $25,350, a trip to Scotland, a camcorder, a computer, and a living room set.
Two new players were introduced on Thursday: Carla and Kathy. Carla and Lauri won the first round, and Carla won $10,000 when she guessed THINGS THAT ARE CANCELLED with 29 seconds left on the clock. She and Stuart almost had a $25,000 win in the next round, but top category THINGS YOU DODGE stopped them at $750.
In Friday's first round, Stuart and Carla had a weak round, winning only $200 in the Circle. New competitor Melissa won $900 in the next round after Stuart got buzzed on $150 box WHAT AN ARTIST USES (PAINTER) for saying "His paint." Her high score meant that Melissa would return the next week, though.
Tallies for the week: Lauri - 6 games, $23,800; Stuart - 4 games, $4,550.
Week of August 24, 1987 (originally slated to air July 27-31, 1987):
The guest stars were Martha Smith of "Scarecrow & Mrs. King" and Henry Polic II of "Webster." They would go on to play against each other on the nighttime version in 1988.
Martha and new player Steven won the first round on Monday and scored $10,000 when Steven guessed top box THINGS YOU CHASE. The next game ended in a 21-21 tie, which was broken by Martha and returning champ Melissa, earning Melissa $5,000. She and Martha won $550 in the Winner’s Circle.
In Tuesday's first round, Dick Clark made a rare colossal goof. Martha and new player Emily played the 7-11 as the last category, and they needed fewer than 7 correct answers to win the game. When they won the game on the sixth word, Dick chimed in and said that they had won the game, but Martha kept going and got the seventh and final word, after which Dick apologized profusely. Emily almost won $10,000, but Martha got buzzed on top box THINGS THAT ARE TENDER for saying "Your loving message." Dick and everyone else were very surprised to learn that "loving" and "tender" were synonymous. In the next round, Henry and Emily had the week's only attempt for $25,000, and they won $550.
On Wednesday, Martha and the new player, a woman named Theo, won the first game and scored $10,000 when Theo guessed top box THINGS IN A WAGON. Martha and Emily tried to tie that mark in the next round but only managed $500.
Henry and Theo took Thursday's first round and had a close call, missing only top box THINGS THAT ARE STEADY in their attempt for $10,000. Henry had better luck with newcomer Valerie in the second round, as she went back and guessed $250 box SOLD BY THE DOZEN for a $10,000 win. After the win, Henry ran and got a prop. It was two tacks under a little roof, and he said that she would need that because it was a "tacks shelter." It was given to him by a friend, who asked that Henry give it to the next person he won big money for on "Pyramid."
On the last day of the week, Martha and new player Pam won $500 in the first round. There was a strange situation in the Winner’s Circle. The judge buzzed Martha on $250 box THINGS THAT ARE TAPED when she said "A video show." After the commercial, Dick explained that the judge had made a bad call, but since Pam never said the answer, they weren't going to credit her with the $250. He did say, though, that if the loss of that box would affect her score significantly, they would bring both contestants back. As it turned out, Valerie won $800 in the next round (missing only $250 box THINGS YOU CAPTURE), so since Pam would have only won $750 if they gave her the $250, it didn't matter. Valerie would return the next week.
Tallies for the week: Martha - 7 games, $31,400; Henry - 3 games, $11,300.
Author's note: The week these shows aired, I was in Los Angeles auditioning for "Pyramid." My mother and I also went to CBS Television City on Thursday and Friday and got to see Abby Dalton and Leonard Maltin play "The $25,000 Pyramid" for three shows and Lynn Herring and Charlie Siebert play with blind contestants for three shows on "The $100,000 Pyramid."
Week of August 31, 1987:
The celebrity guests were Edie McClurg of "Valerie" and Paul Kreppel of "It's a Living." They had been opponents on the nighttime show a few months earlier. This would be Edie's only appearance on this version of the show, but she would go on to make one appearance on John Davidson's version.
At the beginning of Monday's show, Dick acknowledged that the show had been in reruns for four weeks and that this was the first taping following the Iran Contra hearings. Paul and returning champ Valerie won the first game and scored $10,000 when Valerie went back and guessed $250 box THINGS YOU APPLY FOR with one second left on the clock. She and Edie didn't fare as well in the next round, winning only $50.
In Tuesday's first round, Paul and Valerie almost repeated their $10,000 win, but $250 box THINGS THAT ARE WRONG stopped them at $800. New player Linda tried to tie that in the next round but only accumulated $500.
On Wednesday, Paul and Valerie again won the first round. This time, they scored $550. New player Debby won $10,000 with Paul in the next round when she guessed top box THINGS WITH A BUCKLE.
Thursday was an exciting day. The first round ended in a 21-21 tie. Debby broke the tie and earned $5,000. She and Paul almost had another $10,000 win, but $200 box THINGS WITH A CRUST stopped them at $850. Debby won a car with Edie in the second round, and both teams again went to 21 points. In the last category, Edie got a big laugh when she described Joan Collins as "The bitch on 'Dynasty.'" This time, the tie was broken by new player Mike, which netted him $5,000. He and Paul went on to win the $10,000, with one second left on the clock when top box THINGS YOU MEMORIZE was guessed.
Edie and new competitor Gail (wife of future $100,000 tournament player Al Haferkamp) won the first round on Friday. After Paul's six-game winning streak, when Edie sat in the Winner’s Circle, she said, "Finally back." She and Gail won $700. In the last round of the week, Paul and Gail earned $300. Gail would return the next week.
Tallies for the week: Edie - 2 games, $1,850; Paul - 8 games, $46,300.
Next week's match: Heidi Bohay vs. Scott Hamilton.
The guests were Lara Jill Miller of "Gimme a Break" and Harry Waters Jr. of "What a Country." This was the first visit for both celebrities.
