Hello, everyone! New to the forums.
Anyway, the reason i registered with the site was to talk about my favorite game show, which is Greed, hosted by Chuck Woolery. Actually, i wasn't sure whether to put this in here or under the modern subforum since this did air from late 1999 and well into the year 2000. I'm sure a mod will move it if they deem necessary.
At any rate, in my opinion, Greed was the BEST game show EVER on television! For one thing I really like the set that the show was filmed on, and the way it was designed. Whenever i see it when i watch an episode or thinking about the show, i always tend to think about a contestant named Lisa saying sometime toward the end of the April 28, 2000 episode (the Super Greed premiere) declaring, "I'm going for the car, Chuck." But I'll get to the five-episode Super Greed run in a moment.
One of my other favorite parts about Greed? The terrifying, horror-like, creepy music! No, really. Have you seen Greed? The music is creepy as hell. Well, the $50,000, $100,000, $200,000/$2 million, and the Terminator music cues are particularly the creepy ones. But the music they used for the $200,000 and the $2 million question is the creepiest with the Terminator theme right next to it! Also, don't even get me started on the high wrong answer sound that you hear when in those questions that require four correct answers, three of the four are correct but if the last one is wrong there is the creepy sound cue! It's also the same one as when a contestant in the Terminator buzzes in and gets it wrong. Also, i like that the dark red color they'd use if a Tower of Greed question is wrong, as the shade of red for the wrong answer reminds me of blood.
I was 9 when this was originally running on Fox and... like... 11-ish when it was re-running on GSN in 2002. I remember back in the 2002 rerun of Greed on GSN, i had a TV in my room and i would watch it at night, and i would be really scared of the forth answer being wrong and seeing that blood-color come up if it's wrong that i'd immediately turn to Disney Channel or some other channel, then turn back to Greed!
Speaking of the $2 million. It's a shame that throughout this show's insultingly-short 44-episode run, no one ever won the top prize, and unfortunately the one brave contestant who did make it to the $2 million question (Dan Avila) lost because he guessed Tuna when he should've picked Chocolate. What's even sadder is that Dan was invited back for the Tournament of Losers special episode for a second chance to score a big win, as the Tournament of Losers episode was the last of the Million Dollar Moment segment that they did at the end of the previous three episodes. Anyway, sadly he lost that too because he picked Los Vegas instead of Miami. At least he won some money on Who Wants to be a Millionaire, $100k if i'm not mistaken???
Going back to the music cues really quick, my favorite question theme is the $500,000! That one is so epic! I listen to it all the time!
Here's something i've been thinking about recently: someone on YouTube uploaded the clip of Curtis, Melissa, Jackie, and Daniel going for the $1 million question about celebrities dying before they were 30, which was taken from the November 11, 1999 broadcast. But before the question, there was the Terminator when Curtis Warren chose to challenge Jackie Brakeman. Jackie was absolutely stunned and absolutely did not was to do it! Seeing this, you could clearly see and hear in her voice how upset she was that Curtis called on her for the challenge, and worse yet he beat her, causing Jackie to walk off the stage and go home with nothing... and at the end of the Losers episode Jackie was defeated in another Terminator segment, this time by Dan.
Sadly, the former contestants chosen to return for the Losers episode ended up losing again except for Terminator money so that sucks.
My favorite episode EVER of Greed:
... was the Super Greed premiere that aired on April 28, 2000! To me this episode had some of the best questions! I remember there being a Terminator question about a children's tongue twister and a female contestant rung in and called "A peck!" and she was right! The there was the $200k question about musical soundtracks or something like that? Beauty School Dropout, Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee... I don't remember the other four possible answers off the top of my head. But they won that question, and decided not to go for the $500k question, and then a team consisting of Andrea, Andrew, Jeffery, Lisa, and John were brought to the show! The best team! They made it to the $2 million question (which would've been the $1 million question if it was during a regular Greed game) about events that happened before MTV, Lisa and John each decided to take the Jaguar XK8 Convertible car and drive home with $75k in the trunk because they weren't sure if the original Macs were introduced was before MTV or not, which it wasn't. Man... that one was EPIC! The best moment of Greed! John and Lisa were the only two contestants to win the Jaguar XK8 Convertible by the way.
Qualifying Question:
The one thing i DO NOT like about Greed is that they took off the Qualifying Question for Super Greed and during the regular run toward the end of the run. I understand there not being a Qualifying Question on the Losers episode but the Qualifying Question was good for determining who should be seated where, who should be captain, etc.
Possible Second Season:
According to what i kept reading, Fox had renewed the show for a possible Season 2 but Fox had abruptly cancelled the show! I guess maybe because the ratings weren't doing all that hot to warrant a Season 2??? There's a lot of speculation that Fox developed Greed to try and cash in on Who Wants to be a Millionaire's popularity and success. With that in mind, and no offense to WWTBAM fans but I resentfully hate Millionaire because of this! Greed is and always will be in my opinion be a million times better (pun slightly intended lol) better than Millionaire! I wish ABC would just cancel Millionaire already. Honestly, when it came out in early 1999, i was a fan of it as a kid but then Greed came out and i started to like that more.
But nowadays with all these shows and movies being revived and rebooted, including old classic game shows, Greed should be one of those shows getting a revival! Again, i was only 9 when the show was originally on but i would've liked to have been a contestant on Greed, at the risk of not making it past the Qualifying Question, or losing at the Terminator, I'd like to play Greed... and wear one of those contestant gold name tags with my name on it!
Anyway, if there's a revival, which there should be, it should be with the SAME EXACT music cues and themes, SAME EXACT stage set or a 1:1 accurate scale of the set built on another studio (in fact, come to think of it, i'd love to get my hands on the original stage layout blueprints), and basically have the SAME EXACT format as the 1999-2000 run with each episode still being an hour long, still at 4:3 aspect ratio (it'll look kind of weird at 16:9 to me). Maybe a different host but everything else be the same. This show is too good to not have a Season 2 and only have 44 episodes! Also, still a Jaguar XK8 Convertible 2017 or something like that if they make it to the $1 million question and the third answer is revealed to be right.
Lastly (no really, last thing, i promise) for some reason, I am fascinated by the Priceline ads that would air with commercial breaks during episodes of Greed. So maybe if there is a revival, Priceline should still sponsor and provide air travel. Is there even a chance of Greed coming back to GSN anymore? I'd be happy with just seeing all the 44 episodes. Unfortunately at the time i post this, i don't have GSN on my cable subscription.
LOL so sorry you guys for making this sooooo long. I really didn't mean to write a novel about it but i love Greed that much that i had to cover everything about the show i like and hopefully there are other members on this show who love Greed as much as i do if not more than i do. But thanks to every who takes the time to read this long post and taking the additional time to respond and talk about Greed!
