I have been searching for an episode of WLOD that I was a contestant on in the late 80s. I moved to LA in June 1988 and was only there for a year so the episode may have aired in 1988 or 1989, I'm not sure when. I have tried for a long time to find the episode after I lost my VHS tape copy.
My episode of the show starred Ned Beatty and Elayne Boosler and was hosted by Vicki Lawrence. I've seen some listings for the show in other threads on this site, but I do not see those two celebrities listed in the same week. I remember having to bring 5 different outfits to the studio "in case" we continued to win as they shot a whole week of shows in one day. Is there a chance they just never reaired the episode or didn't submit it for syndication? I'm not sure how all of that works, but I find it interesting that my episode, (or all episodes from that week) have sort of vanished from existence or mention anywhere. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

So your episode was on NBC daytime in Summer 1989 if hosted by Vicki Lawrence and given the "five different outfits" spiel. FOr part of that time, they had teams with one celeb and two contestants when for most of the run it was two celebs and one contestants on each team. The bonus round was $50 for the first word guessed right, and each word in 90 seconds after that doubled the money for the contestant(s). After one team won $25,600 by getting ten right, they changed the bonus round so that seven words in 90 seconds won the bonus and $5K. The NBC daytime version ended on 9/1/1989 and the syndicated verson continued in the 1989-1990 with the returning champions and bonus round format the daytime version had in Summer 1989, and with RObb Weller replacing Bert Convy as host.

Wow, that is very informative. I don’t know why I didn’t know that. We did indeed have two contestants on each team and only one celebrity. Elayne for the girls and Ned for the guys. I felt the episode was unfairly biased for the girls. In my round, the girls had to draw “Cookie Monster” and I was given “Leave your name and number at the sound of the beep.” They drew a blue outline of a monster and a cookie. Easy. I had to try to draw and answering machine connected to a phone with a cassette tape and a quote bubble. It was just a ridiculous thing to have to draw. When I finished I looked at Vicki and said “That’s not a category, that’s a book” to which she replied “Don’t get snippy with me, Brian.” I have always had a good laugh telling that story, but sure would love to see it again someday. I guess maybe the “special format” you mentioned is one they scrapped for syndication knowing it didn’t fit the formula and so I can’t find it anywhere. The format changes made on the NBC run in SUmmer 1989 carried over to the syndicated version in Fall 1989(daytime version ended on 9/1/89), but they went back to two celebs and one contestant on each team and the bonus was seven words in 90 seconds for $5K(passing a word meant the money score went back to zero, so a team had to get seven in 90 seconds without passing to win). The Bert Convy/Robb Weller syndicated versions aired on USA from 12/31/90-12/25/1992, and the first season of the Convy WLOD aired on GSN from 4/15/2002-March 2004, but the Vicki Lawrence version hadn't aired anywhere since its cancellation 34 years ago. Maybe DIsney someday would put the episodes on streaming.
