I don't belong to 18 forums, or chat regularly. I read, for years, the blogging of a fictional character who called himself or herself Casey, and then Ralph. Nobody is going to bemoan the loss of Game Show Follies.... well almost nobody. A few people said they would miss it after "Casey" announced on Oct. 1 that the blog was dead.
The blog author deleted years of work today. I have a theory as to why, but it's just a theory.
Nobody here cares, and "Ralph" was the butt of jokes on the internet. But hey, let's pour one out for a dead homie, a guy who blogged almost daily for more than a decade, even if he's ashamed of it and doesn't want anyone to see it any more.

I remember he would get agitated if someone like me said anything negative about Rich Cronin, the GSN CEO from 2001 to 2007. Yes, it was because of Rich Cronin why Press Your Luck came to GSN, but that didn’t mean he never made any stupid decisions. It was Cronin who started the practice of GSN speedups that they still do (though it’s not every show anymore like it was during his time). And don’t even get me started on the Reality show rebranding in 2004.

It was Cronin who started the practice of GSN speedups that they still do (though it’s not every show anymore like it was during his time). And don’t even get me started on the Reality show rebranding in 2004. If the cranky author was a big supporter of Cronin, it wasn't because of PYL, I reckon. Unless the author thought the Double Whammy was some brilliant tweak to the game. "Casey" showed little enthusiasm for PYL as a whole. But yeah, if you didn't agree with his opinion, he might not say it in so many words, but he'd let you know you were wrong, or make some preposterous allegation that because you don't like Harvey's Feud, you had to be an "older is better" acolyte. While there were plenty of forgettable, frivolous blog posts at Ralph's Follies, he would post some nugget almost every day. He had to get creative and pick wiki pages for old game shows to fill some of his weekends, but it took some dedication and energy to keep churning it out day after day, retired or not. If anyone is doing anything close to what he was churning out, I'm not aware. Blog writing is pretty thankless these days. 20 years ago it was mommy blogs and local TV news anchors imparting their wisdom to the masses. Now it's all podcasts and video, and who has time for a 60-minute podcast? Give us video, and make it "short!"

Now that Game Show Follies is gone, where can we find a blog about Game Shows? Buzzerblog. We all have different definitions of a blog, I suppose. Buzzer has a lot going on, between its tweets and occasional posts on its website. It has blog in its name. I wouldn't call it the definitive news source for all things game show, but I don't think of it as a blog. There are authors, there are reviews, but it doesn't have the personality, opinion or tone of a blog by my definition. And there's no interaction. Blogs don't require it, but most of them I see do allow for response and reaction. One I have read for years never does, but most blogs allow some form or reader response. What they're doing on Buzzerblog is far different than what "Ralph" did on an almost daily basis. Are they both blogs? Sure, why not. Perhaps it's time for the next retired Texan (allegedly) to blossom online.

Ralph "Casey" Abell and I didn't always see eye to eye. He was downright cranky and awful at times and could just be a total ass at times.
There were times I agreed with him, times I disagreed. He enjoyed labeling people without actually knowing them, and he had the loyal readers of his blog that would kiss his ass.
The internet is probably better off with one less blog like his. I wish him no ill will, I wish him the best.

He was downright cranky and awful at times and could just be a total ass at times. He enjoyed labeling people without actually knowing them, and he had the loyal readers of his blog that would kiss his ass. Can't disagree. I always wondered why the author would write, engage the masses and then act as if they're wrong for having a different opinion or liked something he didn't. Who does that? Many things the author did defied logic, as if the purpose was to see how quick or easily he could get people going with his nonsense. I'd bite sometimes. I'd respond as if the author was serious. But it was hard to believe this wasn't some elaborate joke that only the author was benefitting from. GSF seemed like a blog that Andy Kaufman would have written were he alive today, knowing he'd mine comedy gold from it. And he'd be the only one who would ever benefit from it, because he would never break character and let the audience in on the fact it was a work. And at the same time, the author would churn out something most every day, lots of times that content was simply a little tidbit plucked from the internet, with a comment or observation. A simple 60-second look at the world of game shows, nothing more. Enjoy it and move on. The author was an enigma. Yet beloved by so many in the game show community!

I always wondered why the author would write, engage the masses and then act as if they're wrong for having a different opinion or liked something he didn't. Who does that? Unfortunately it seems like there are quite a few writers or "journalists", people who actually do it for a living, that like to think they're always right and that their opinion is the one that counts, but there are also many who don't mind debating or just disagreeing on something, but the people who need to feel validated are the ones who feel insecure about their egos. He wasn't necessarily beloved by everyone in the game show community though. Alex Davis, BuzzerBlog purveyor and Ralph have went at it. Cory Anotado and Ralph also didn't get along I believe.

I knew any thread about Casey was going to be a bad idea, because it was going to be a piss-and-moan thing eventually.
I'm highly considering locking this thread.

Okay. I am going to lock this thread, because I knew it was going to turn into a very slight shitshow. (Loosely.)
