Let me just say, first of all, that the title of this thread is misleading. As of right now, this revival is little more than a proposal in search of a buyer; there hasn't even been a pilot reel shot yet. When it's sold to a network or syndicator, then you can say it's "back," but until then it's vaporware.
As always, I want to wait and see what comes of this before I condemn (or praise) a revival sight-unseen. However, I noted some turns of phrase in this article that raised a few warning flags in my mind:
Now, maybe I'm a voice in the wilderness here, but to me one of the things I dearly loved about the old Gladiators series was its inherent corniness, the fact it wasn't taken all that seriously (other than during the actual running of the events themselves, of course). There was always a certain tongue-in-cheek element to the show that made it palatable, even as it evolved into something more closely resembling today's X Games in its later seasons. Even the Hulk Hogan series from 2008 had that aspect to it, though mostly because Hogan is himself a larger-than-life character and everything around him has to come up to that level. I'm not at all confident that a take on Gladiators in the vein of what they're describing here will work as well, but I pause here to remind myself that I'm probably not in the target audience for this sort of thing. I'll definitely want to see or hear more about this before passing any kind of judgment one way or another. It may not even get greenlit at all.
Right away, though, I'll say that my first impression wasn't a positive one. Name-checking The Hunger Games, to me, was a mistake. Not because I dislike the series (I actually have no opinion on it one way or another), but because I'm not at all convinced that's the sort of image you want to evoke here.

As far as I know, the only Gladiators from the Hulk Hogan series who have made a legit name for themselves were Crush (MMA star Gina Carano), Beast (Matt Morgan, a one-shot gladiator in the 2nd season), and Rocket (Season 1 champion turned Gladiator, Evan Dollard, now known for his appearances on American Ninja Warrior)

Wasn't someone from Battle Dome a Gladiator? I can't remember his name...
EDIT: He might have been on the waiting list.

Yes, that was Michael O'Hearn, who played the part of Michael O'Dell on Battle Dome, AND Titan on American Gladiators. He was the Golden-Boy looking one. Speaking of Battle Dome, another regular on that show was T-Money, AKA Terry Crews, the new host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire! Yep, the "OLD SPICE IS TOO POWERFUL TO BE A NICKNAME!" guy...

I just found out that ANOTHER one of the Battle Dome warriors was later a Gladiator.
Season 2 warrior "Snake" was played by Jesse "Justice" Smith, Jr, AKA Gladiator "Justice".
He was more of a smack talker in his Gladiator days...

There's gonna be a new American Gladiators remake? What a surprise because Dad and I used to watch American Gladiators a lot when I was young and so did my aunt because she had a giant crush on Nitro and she would watch American Gladiators just to see Nitro. Is this new American Gladiators remake gonna be syndicated or will a station such as ABC or NBC carry it? Because I hope it will be awesome and maybe they will bring some of the nicknames that were used for the 80's and 90's Gladiators such as Titan Turbo Malibu Laser Sabre for the guys and the girls Gladiators names like Ice Jazz Siren Storm out of retirement for these new Gladiators when the American Gladiators remake debuts. Let's hope that this remake is successful and a amazing hit for TV, Kelsey

Umm Kelsey, they cant bring Siren back. She's dead. Died in 2008. The others are too old. We don't need the old ones back. Be original. Keep the old names retired. Otherwise it will cause people to compare the new nitro to the old, for example and thats the last thing they want.

...Yeah, sometimes I think having such easy access to shows of the past, like we do via outlets like YouTube and such, really does tend to blind us as to exactly how much time has passed in the real world since then. It's not pleasant to consider that it's been twenty-five years -- a full quarter of a century -- since American Gladiators debuted in September of 1989... but that is indeed what has happened. Time does not stand still.
I once wrote a really long post about just this very subject back on the old GSN boards; maybe not about Gladiators specifically, but about how easy it is to create a sort of temporal dissonance between old recordings of TV shows and today. I wonder if I could dig it up again. Sounds like it still has some relevance.
Also, I didn't know Siren had passed away. That sucks. 8^/

Thanks for the linkage, guys. I was able to find the very article. 8^) (Note: This was written in January 2006. Since then, things have changed even more, mostly that even more hosts have passed away -- including, only about a month after I posted this, Peter Tomarken -- but the points made therein are still relevant.)
