Link posted in the next paragraph. A warning for some NSFW language in the second sentence in case some people don't like that sort of editorializing. As the fallout from the Sony Pictures hack continues, which has put out many professional emails from folks within the company; one of the latest items is a series of emails involving CBS and Sony executives, including Harry Friedman regarding CBS acquiring the rights to Thursday NFL telecasts, which meant that dozens of markets that carry the shows on CBS affiliates would end up pre-empting or bumping WoF and J!. I try to be one of those people that doesn't actually flip out about preemptions (though sports preemptions annoy me to no end), and I know the fandom has differences of opinion on how things on WoF and J! are handled... but I definitely side with Harry on this. It's ridiculous to expect an EP to be on board with you when you plan to preempt their programs. And at that, there's the issue of not even being honest and forthcoming enough about how many markets that would be affected.

Given the fact that 99% of the games were blowouts (and even if they weren't), I'd be pissed off as well if I knew that we couldn't sit and watch Jeopardy for a few Thursdays.
Makes me kind of glad that our ABC station has them.
Seriously, though - NFL should be on Sundays and Mondays only. Not this Thursday shit.

I'm not only glad that my NBC affiliate (WXIA 11 Alive) carries Jeopardy, but ever since they acquired another local station (WATL 36), they've managed to put WoF on there, and have worked out a plan so that if something calls for J! or other programming on there in general to be preempted for any reason, shows will air on the sister station, on time. Like, when the snowstorm that basically shut Atlanta down for 2 days took place, all of the daytime and nighttime shows just aired there. And other programming scheduled to air on 36 is usually rescheduled (it also helps that a large chunk of it is reruns).
I kinda figured it'd be worse than what Leslie Ryan was saying (34 markets being affected instead of a "few") considering the fact that daytime/early evening shows aren't treated in the same veil as, say, the Sunday Night Lineup on CBS. When sports pushes that back and things air 10 minutes late, it's an annoyance in itself. But shows like The Good Wife aren't requested to do promotional tie-ins for sports. And when daytime shows are preempted, either network or syndicated shows, and especially if there's no area in which a secondary station can air the show regularly in a decent time frame.... the show's either moved to an ungodly hour (e.g. 1:52 am), or it's not aired at all.
Also I love how they tried to smooth it over first by Leslie saying she was a fan of Dan Patrick/Sports Jeopardy, then by her saying it'd be just a "few" markets being affected and Harry didn't fall for any of it. Good for him.

Source/full article: NYDailyNews.comMy take: I'm all in favor of letting kids down gently, and I'll freely admit I didn't watch the episode in question (I only rarely am able to watch the J!/Wheel combo) so I can't comment on whether Alex could/should have handled the situation any better. With that said, there does have to be a point where a line is drawn. It's the old argument about "participant ribbons" and all of that, and when added to the old stereotype of a "stage mom"... yeah, no wonder Alex got a little miffed. Threatening to quit over it may seem a bit extreme, but if the rumblings are true and he is in fact looking to hang it up at the end of his current contract, he probably figured he's got nothing to lose at this point.

What the...? I don't get it.
Trebek has empathy for everyone. If someone bows out, I'm sure he feels sorry for the contestant in question. Kids or adults. It doesn't matter. Just because it came off as less than what the mother expected it to be is lunacy.
Are we really making such a big production out of that?

Like I said, it's a "stage mom" situation. Ask anyone in the acting/entertainment industries about the phenomenon, and to a person they'll relate at least one horror story along lines very similar to this one. They really are worse than "soccer moms" and the dads who conspire with Little League umpires.
Trebek's reaction is more eye-rolling incredulity, the whole "I'm too old for this crap" thing, than it is anything else—including any serious threat to walk, I believe. However, since it's a game show-related newsbite from something that's become a pretty major news story over the past few days, I felt I should at least relay it.

I posted about this in the Jeopardy thread, but a few bad apples spoil the fun for everyone, I'm all for stopping Kids Week
Last year we had the tantrum thrown over the misspell, which wouldn't of mattered in the first place.
Or you could do a kids week and not dumb down the material.

This was mentioned on Jimmy Fallon's Tonight Show monologue the other night. I agree that this sounds like some Dance Moms realness that went down and pretty much something that was entirely unnecessary to do. Not to mention, Alex has always seemed flexible about legit mistakes in tapings before, like when he needs to occasionally re-read a clue so it'll be edited in post to pick up a different inflection or something. Wouldn't make sense for him to just go off like that for no reason.
