I only knew Myerson from her TV appearances sitting next to Henry Morgan, but that was only one phase of an eventful life. Although incredibly glamorous on "I've Got a Secret," she grew up poor and not necessarily attractive, as she was taller than the boys. She won the Miss America pageant only days after the 1945 conclusion of WWII, a notoriously inconvenient time to be Jewish. Corporate sponsors were hostile because of her heritage, but she used the scholarship money to seriously study music. Myerson caught the attention of TV producers, then later migrated to government, while enduring failed marriages, severe health trouble, and political scandal.
Bess was my favorite panelist on "I've Got a Secret" (sorry Bill), although I didn't love the show. The panelists were (mostly) excellent players, but the game element was treated as an inconvenience. If they were trying to be the anti-"What's My Line?", I think they succeeded, but I rarely enjoyed the demonstrations or general mayhem.
I guess we're running low now on surviving panelists. Jayne Meadows and Betsy Palmer are still going, as is Carol Channing, who guested on the panel a few times in the 1960s.
