“Membership in the Game Show Forum is by invitation”. That rule had been in place since 2013 though there are two sections open to guests, The Big Board and Game Show Channels

It makes sense that membership would only be by invitation, considering the surge of spam many years ago. Very few users, if any, registered as a result. Plus, I did realize that a lot of users got banned from that site (including I, due to a comment about a game show model's lawsuit which was likely deemed unacceptable). Some of the members (whose names I will not mention) were jerks, and may have turned people away from that forum. All that, plus many banned users, aging demographics, and lack of interest in classic game shows by many younger viewers, may be contributing factors to the forum's demise this coming January 1.
I think there seems to be a trend these days that online forums are a dying breed. I think we can all blame social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., being the message board of choice in this day and age. Makes me wonder if G-R.net may end up following suit?

I think there seems to be a trend these days that online forums are a dying breed. I think we can all blame social media, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc., being the message board of choice in this day and age. Makes me wonder if G-R.net may end up following suit? I have seen a couple of online forums die over the years.
The Professional Bowlers Association had an active forum that was proactively shut down due to level of vitriol in the posts there. They gave at least a month's notice if any users wanted to archive content before the plug was pulled. I was sorry to see it go, as I felt it was still a net positive.
Another TV focused (it was primarily focused on the regional distribution on Sunday afternoon NFL games, but branched into all TV sports) forum, the 506.com, recently transitioned to discord. The boards are still accessible in Read-Only and edit mode, but no new content is allowed. IMHO, the value in that board was the extensive historical listing of announcers for all national MLB, NFL, etc. in the Sports Broadcasting History sub-board. Current discussion is now housed on the discord server, and a new website for the historical information is being updated, but it is not the same. The reason for the move is that the board software could not be updated.
Yet there are other travel-related forums I participate in that continue to thrive, flyertalk, and disboards.
My whole takeaway is that I more clearly appreciate the fleeting nature of information posted on the internet. Like YT videos that are disappear, information on forums can be lost to the world forever, Sites like in the wayback machine typically don't archive every linked page, so information is lost despite their best efforts.

An update: I've been informed by someone that JasonA1 and MSTieScott are taking the board over in January.

I too got bullied in the group. Most of the members were jerks. And a member called me an f***ing idiot.

The Game SHow FOrum as started at EZBoard will turn 20 in mid-December. It had a nice run. The board was at its best when Ottinger/Clementson/Zinkin ran it.

That board, while sometimes a source for valuable information and interesting discussion, has also frequently been a haven for overtly mean-spirited comments and nitpicky arguments. Plus it really started to feel like an exclusive clique, even before the membership closed up (which of course made the problem worse). All of that combined with the general gravitation towards modern social media has made the board feel like it outlived its shelf life. But I can only hope the new moderators will open the membership back up and do something about the negativity.

Well, it's great that The Game Show Forum isn't shutting down after all and will continue as usual. But in this one, I wish the guys like Sam Mitchell and Tyler(aka pyramidfan90) are still hanging in here though.

On a private board someone else moderated, he might not have gotten away with it. Zinkin himself said Moronionaire ended when Randy Amasia died, and he would not continue it on Game Show Forum. Other parodies like Wheel of F-Ups, Loah-DUH-d Questions, and JeoparDUMB were done from 2000-2002 in ATGS
