Here's an unusual episode of the '80s Split Second revival. At first I thought this was a pilot, but instead it appears this show was produced as a Canadian series prior to entering US syndication in September '87 (this episode claims to be from January of that year). Can you spot the differences (mostly visual) between this version and the one we eventually saw south of the 49th?

Zach Ellis is a trader from Canada, he gets the Canada version of GSN. That's where this is from

Was Split Second the show that Monty Hall hosted in 1987 that revived his career? Because my aunt used to see the reruns of Split Second on The Family Channel when they would have their game show hour in the 90's and I also have the theme song of Split Second too as well. And didn't Split Second have a bonus round where the player chose a car and put the key in the ignition and if the car started he/she won the car as a prize?, Kelsey

Monty Hall actually revived his career three years beforehand when he hosted The All-New Let's Make a Deal in the U.S. Great to see that GameTV in Canada is now airing Split Second, and thankfully doesn't appear to be a cheap game show like Definition or Talkabout was. At least Split Second did offer a car as the big prize, and not a lot of Canadian game shows offered a car on a regular basis during that time.

The car round starts at about 3:10

Do you know why it was changed? Because that particular bonus game was *borrowed* by the John Davidson version of Hollywood Squares. A couple other reasons come to mind... 1. Back then, the way they determined that one would start and the others wouldn't was that they disconnected the coils on the losing cars, so that they would crank, but they wouldn't turn over. In one instance, however, a spark plug was disconnected instead, resulting in a wrong car starting, albeit giving off a lot of smoke. BTW, the contestant ended up being given a car, and GM was given profuse apologies. 2. Possible environmental reasons, such as gas being used and exhaust fumes, including plenty of smoke from said mishap described above.

Just budget concerns, I think, more than anything. Remember this revival was being done on the cheap.

Remember this revival was being done on the cheap. As was the case with most game shows from Canada.

Most, yes, but not all. The original Lingo with its potential $64,000 grand prize comes readily to mind, though of course there was that little detail about contestants not being paid their full winnings...

It was nice getting a longer piece of the theme at the end than we usually got. Love that Todd Thicke composition!

I know I'm several months late on this, but I wanted to clear something up: At first I thought this was a pilot, but instead it appears this show was produced as a Canadian series prior to entering US syndication in September '87 (this episode claims to be from January of that year). This is actually from early in the run (the show debuted on December 15, 1986), before the audiovisuals changed to the style seen in the Family Channel repeats that have been around. Further, Split Second didn't enter US syndication in September '87 -- that's actually when the revival ended, both here and in Canada.
