In 1987 HSN {Back in the days when HSN was known as Home Shopping Network} had it's first game show called The Home Shopping Game that was hosted by Peter Tomarken and aired in syndication and what made The Home Shopping Game unique was that every single prize that was offered to contestants was also offered to home viewers at a special price by HSN. Before Shop Til You Drop and many other shopping based shows hit the scene this rare treat is well worth checking out and is one of the rarest Peter Tomarken shows ever made, Did you like The Home Shopping Game?, Kelsey

Ugh. Don't remind me of this train wreck. The Home Shopping Game was a half-hearted attempt at expanding the then-Home Shopping Club's access to viewers who didn't (yet) have cable TV and didn't usually stay up late enough for their local low-rent indy station to carry an overnight feed of the network. The actual game content was very lightweight, barely worth mentioning (unscramble three words relating to the item on offer to win money), and honestly only rates a footnote in game show history because of the "novelty" of offering the same prizes to home viewers. It was a half-hour infomercial for HSC, nothing more and nothing less.
Also, to clear up your confusion: The Home Shopping Game was hosted by Bob Goen, not Peter Tomarken. You're probably thinking of the Merrill Heatter-produced Bargain Hunters, which had a cup of coffee on ABC Daytime in 1987 and also had a home-shopping element to it. It... wasn't much better, let's just say. Even ol' Pistol Pete himself was once heard to call Bargain Hunters a "piece of [bleep]" in an interview he gave circa the late-'90s.

Oh, Dear, I don't know why Peter Tomarken popped into my head when I was writing about this show. I was eating a cupcake and I must've put frosting on the keyboard while writing. Anyway I happened to learn about this show in my game show encylopedia and didn't know that The Home Shopping Game existed. My mother and I are big fans of HSN and we watch it sometimes for awesome deals. I never knew that HSN would go into producing game shows and getting talented hosts like Bob Goen to host them, Thank you very much for correcting me TheKid965 you're a true friend, Kelsey

Both The Home Shopping Game and Bargain Hunters were pretty atrocious. It takes a lot for a host to admit publicly that a game that they hosted was awful. I can only think of Bill Cullen and his words on Winning Streak ("it just didn't work") as the other time it happened publicly.

How about Jackie Gleason who apologized for "You're in the Picture" after just one episode?
