Witney doesn't seem to have quite as much energy as Mikki did.
I hope she proves me wrong!

Catch 21's revival debuted today. Unlike the original series, all three players played the first two rounds, and no more points for correct answers. I don't believe the questions are multiple choice anymore. After a contestant buzzes in and gives an answer, Alfonso asks if it's correct. The winner of each round wins a power chip for the bonus round. The first two players to win a round play in the third round to see who plays the bonus. No word on what happens if the same player wins the first two rounds. No word on if a bonus prize or an extra power chip is awarded for someone who gets the first 21 in the maingame. Alfonso doesn't say goodbye to the eliminated contestants on air. $1K is still given to the winner of the match. The bonus round pays $2500 for the first 21, $5K for the second 21, and $25K for the third 21. No extra power chips for winning the game. Merrill Heatter's name is still listed as a producer, despite the fact that he died two years ago.

So, this Catch 21 revival is played like Season 1 where there wasn't a bonus prize for getting the first 21 of the episode in the main game and no extra chip for winning the game. I wish there wasn't an announcer for Catch 21 anyway or it could be Mikki's voice in this revival.

So for the purists, it's somewhat true to the first incarnation of Catch-21.

I like the new Catch 21.
I like that they have Witney more involved in the show now, but she wouldn't have been my choice to replace Mikki if she really couldn't come back. I would have chosen Patricia Kara.
The new theme song is better than the last one, but not as good as the original. I think the original suits the show best.

Well, they quickly went back to rewarding an extra power chip for winning the game. Also, in this revival, when 1 player wins the first 2 rounds, instead of immediately choose a card to determine who's going to the 3rd round, they now use a tiebreaker method by being the first to correctly answer another question in order to draw the first card in the tiebreaker. I'd not be surprised if this incarnation produced another episode where they used the Season 1 method by not adding an additional power chip for winning the game. This incarnation is sounding too bland, which might explain to wish they'd be rerunning the Season 1 episodes again, that season didn't offer a prize for being the first person to get a 21 exactly either.

As we witnessed, tonight's episode had a situation in the 3rd round where one player had a 16 and the other had a 17 and if the person with a 17 had control and a 5 showed up, the segment is automatically over and the player with a 16 won by default. Yikes. This exactly happened during Season 2(one of the last months where the GSN originals actually had credit crunches).

The player with 16 should have gone to 21 but still not win until they regain control by answering the next question correctly.

It's interesting that a Merrill Heater devised show has a rule like that when one considers Hollywood Squares (all of the standalone versions) were notorious for contestants not getting automatic wins.

I follow some casting companies on Twitter, and I've noticed that GSN's looking for contestants. You have to fly to Vegas for filming. Not California, like a lot of shows are. Surprised by this?

Now for those who were Catch 21 fanatics, in the first season, there were questions about either George W. Bush or VP Dick Cheney, but in the second season, they were hinting with the questions involving VP Joe Biden. Another channel that might be interested in rerunning Catch 21(including the first 2 seasons) is most likely BET. Did the first season of Catch 21 always have a sponsor? I ask this because in the first 5 aired episodes of the second season(#2005, #2007, #2006, #2008, #2011), Foster Grants was the sponsor.

I know this is pretty late, but I have to be honest, I'm not too big on this version of Catch 21. From what I've watched, Alfonso doesn't have the energy that he had when he first hosted this show years ago. The new card dealer Whitney doesn't have the energy that Mikki did. As a result, this version doesn't do much for me. It's not as exciting as it was before.
Also, I'm not a fan of how Alfonso doesn't ask players if they'd like to freeze if they have something like an 18. I'm watching an episode now and even though it didn't affect the outcome of the round, he never asked the player if he wanted to freeze on the 18 that he had while his opponent had a 16. I know 18's not the best, but it's still a fairly high number for this game.
I'm also not a fan of how we can't see all the cards that have been played in the bonus round once a 21 has been acquired. Once that happens, all the cards go away and the number 21 is just displayed for that row. Being able to see what cards have been played can help get an idea on what cards are left in the deck. Now the player has to remember what cards appeared on the 21 hand. It's inconvenient.
Another thing I'm not a fan of is that in the bonus round, if a card shows up that would give the contestant a 21, Alfonso still asks them where they'd like to put the card. Like come on now. Why do that? Yeah, I'd like to play that king on the 4 and not the ace. >_>
Overall, it's not bad, but I much prefer the original Catch 21. It's still miles better than the hot garbage that is Get A Clue, I'll give it that.

Think about this, in the first season episodes, in the bonus game segment, once a player caught the 21, all the cards put in that column goes away and displays "21". In this version, it doesn't have the end game music nor the drum sound that goes with each card drawn either. I guess we can still remember the Bungee Whammy put in the then-new 9-squared GSN bug in the corner in the first-run Season 2 episodes of Catch 21, along with GSN's new remake of the Newlywed Game (which had the wives answering the 5-point questions while the husbands were secluded in the soundproof booths and had a Goldywed bonus round).

Another thing I don't like about the new version is that the trivia questions are no longer multiple choice. I miss those.
