On another topic, Wheel has changed enormously over the years. Check a few of the old Woolery videos on YouTube to see just how drastically the format has evolved. Fair point. Adding the Bonus Round and removing the shopping element were both good changes in my opinion, although some of their changes tend to be more headscratching (removing returning players because they want to tape in any order they damn well please good solvers could hit penalties while bad ones could luck into a runaway game; removing all the "bonus" categories and questions; the $1,000,000 top prize as a whole, really; etc.). They've also somehow managed to lose some of their grasp of the English language (back on Friday, they had A WHIFF OF PERFUME in the Bonus Round...as a Phrase) and ignore pretty much everything that's "cool" today (Lady Gaga's never been in a puzzle, for instance; the aforementioned episode had DON'T HAVE A COW MAN! as a TV Quote about 25 years after it stopped being relevant), which I personally don't think are good for the show's quality. Certainly the changes are as significant as anything that's happened to Millionaire over time. Hasn't Wheel pretty much become Millionaire (or, for that matter, pretty much any primetime network game show of the past decade) by this point? Not talking about the format, but just the general feel, the spoilery (and sometimes outright misleading) promos, and the mindset of not particularly feeling generous with its money. Then again, given how much I've seen of "classic" Wheel (pretty much anything from 1973-95 or so that's been online), that's probably more me being nostalgic, I suppose.

I like the current Wheel. A lot faster paced and a lot more puzzle-solving. Millionaire, well, I'm not crazy about all the randomization, but the syndie moves quicker than the original and we don't have to sit through those first few braindead-easy questions.

Regarding the part in bold: Ugh. Hate them. When someone wins $1M, you'd want to be surprised. Don't air a promo and show us who won on whatever theme week it is. Take Deal or No Deal for example - they made it clear in one pre-season promo that there were going to be $1M winners in that season. They didn't tell or show you who they were. But they made it clear that someone was going to win the prize. At least that left a little bit of mystery as to how the mystery contestants won.

The second and last $1 million winner? Well the producers did everything in their power that night to spoil her $1 million win with that "In 25 minutes, history will be made" crap. That was a dead giveaway and I hate it when an episode gets spoiled like that. It ruins the point of watching the show. Why should I watch if you're already giving away the outcome? I think Wheel did this once with one of their $1 million winners as well. I like mystery and I've grown to want to avoid being spoiled (with the exception of video games like Super Smash Bros; it's mostly game shows).

That was a dead giveaway and I hate it when an episode gets spoiled like that. It ruins the point of watching the show. Why should I watch if you're already giving away the outcome? Exactly. I know the night Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader? had its first $1,000,000 winner, the promo before the two episodes said something like "One of them wins the million. Maybe...they both do!" After the first episode, a celebrity show, the promo said about the second person's episode "Watch her win the million!" Hell, 1 vs. 100 outright spoiled its only $1,000,000 winner! I think Wheel did this once with one of their $1 million winners as well. If I'm not mistaken, they did it with all three -- the second one was "Celebrating 30" week, where they moved the big show from May 31 to the 30th because Thirty-30-Thirty (the show's website pointed out this win and the fact that 30-year-old Autumn won $1,030,340 during Celebrating 30 week, then had the gall to "wonder" if its happening on May 30 was "Coincidence or fate?"). The third was "Imagine what it's like for a teacher to win One Million Dollars." Both weeks' promos showed very obvious hints of said $1,000,000 wins, with the Celebrating 30 promo even outright saying someone was gonna win the Million while showing clips of said episode. The part I noted about deceptive promos applied here, too, as early in Season 28 they had a promo saying something like "Soon, Wheel of Fortune just might have a million reasons to watch.", set over clips of someone landing on and claiming the Million-Dollar Wedge; said person later lost the wedge and didn't even win the game.

Some interesting news about Millionaire. From my blog... Replanting a money tree
Chad Mosher reports that syndie Millionaire will return to a non-random money tree for its new season this fall. Chad says that he doesn't know if the questions will also be of increasing (instead of random) difficulty. He would be "surprised" if the difficulty levels didn't return to their classic increasing pattern, but he doesn't know for sure. I have to think that a money tree wouldn't make much sense with random difficulty, but we'll see. The 50:50 lifeline will also return, replacing Jump the Question. The other lifelines, Ask the Audience and Plus One, will remain unchanged. All in all, the shift is back toward the original version of the syndie. Chris Harrison will run a show rather similar to what Meredith Vieira hosted back in 2002. With Millionaire's ratings bumping along at all-time lows, it's no surprise that the show is getting a makeover. The producers may think that nostalgia for the good old days (and good old rules) might help revive the syndie. The Nielsen Company will decide if the rules changes work better than the quest in the last couple seasons for the next Steve Harvey.

It's about time. Millionaire didn't accomplish anything with the shuffle format, hopefully it all returns to its classic form. That would be very nice minus the Phone a Friend of course, I understand the reasoning for getting rid of that lifeline. This is what I've been thinking they should do with the lifelines though, bring back 50:50 and keep Plus One.
Honestly, the ratings weren't great before the new format, but they were a bit better than now. I'll probably want to watch again on a regular basis next season as opposed to me watching casually.
How about bringing back the hot seat while we're at it? Probably not. But Millionaire was certainly known for its "trademark" hot seat and it was better with it as opposed to having contestants stand like most game shows are these days where contestants stand. I guess it provides more "drama".

I saw the Chris Harrison debut episode of Millionaire this morning and let me tell you I think they did an awesome job picking Chris Harrison as the new star and I noticed this change that Chris announced on the intro of the episode and I want to know what this change to Millionaire is. All I know is that it's something called a Money Tree and is it a new name for the question board?. But other than that Millionaire has become more awesome than ever before and I think Millionaire's ratings will get really huge because of Chris Harrison as the new star. As for Chris Harrison himself he really is an great host and Millionaire will really show his talent for game shows and like singer Johnny Mathis says in his song Chris is "Wonderful Wonderful." Millionaire has really outdone itself once again and I think Chris is here to stay for good on Millionaire, Overall Grade: A, Kelsey

Will your mind change if you see the ratings for the first week and they're possibly the same as they were within the past few seasons? Honestly, they can change the format as many times as they want... But it can't hold a candle to the original version (or Meredith's).

ladykelsey with all due respect, don't speak for Nielsen. Don't speak for the TV audience. The ratings will be what they will be. Let me say though that I liked it a lot better seeing that they got rid of the Jump the Question lifeline. I realize that the questions don't have the increased level of difficulty that they're really all "difficult", whereas the Regis/Meredith era had the $100-$1,000 questions easy, $2,000-$32,000 medium, and $32,000-$1,000,000 harder. I still question whether they ever want to give away the million dollars. I'm not saying that should just give it to the contestants, but man it's been awhile since anyone has won the big prize it still makes me wonder if they have any intent on ever giving it out again. Overall I thought it was pretty good. I like it much better than the shuffle format and I'm glad they brought back the "safety levels", adds a little more excitement for the audience watching at home, like myself. I wonder if a contestant that misses one of the first five questions would get nothing, like in the Regis/Meredith era. Considering there is no real level of difficulty it doesn't look like that would be kind of bad to see. But that is why you have the lifelines even though I complain a lot about wasting lifelines on certain questions. That is one reason contestants don't win the big money. Wasting lifelines or "cheats". I'll give it an average C grade for now.

In Wrestling, this is known as the Gorilla position, as a nod to Gorilla Monsoon.

I read a faux tweet on Casey Abell's blog that Who Wants to be a Millionaire has disappeared from the schedule. Does this mean that the series is officially cancelled, just weeks after Chris Harrison started as host?
If true, then all I can say is, it's not a bad thing. Since the series was revived for syndication in 2002, there were only three million dollar winners, the first two in Meredith's first year as host. And there were no million dollar winners under the shuffle format (I did learn that the reason for the shuffle format was because of a lawsuit for using the original format). The series was the best when Regis Philbin was hosting on ABC (and when I first saw it in 1999, it was the first show I actively watched on ABC since 1984). The shuffle format just plain sucked, I don't know how the show managed to stay on the air for that long.
Either way, it was good while it lasted. At least the pre-2010 format.

I'm going to move this to the AP-Millionaire thread for you.
And what makes you think that the lack of winners is a bad thing?
