September 4th, 1972. A day that will go down in game show history, as three game shows made their debut.
Two of which there are videos of their debuts.
The one which we can't seem to find, unless Wink has the video and is about to release it on HIS terms, is Gambit, which combined knowledge with the luck of the cards.
The second was a show that not only brought back a host to TV's good graces, as well as game show fans, it also had us rooting for the jokers.
THE JOKER'S WILD
And then there was one more show, a show that was making a comeback along with changes after a seven year absence, and that comeback is STILL going, after 43 years. The show that changed daytime television forever with three simple words...
COME ON DOWN!

Wink did post a Gambit pilot. Just not the one you were thinking about.

I'm going to sticky this thread (even though it hasn't seen light since September). I was thinking that people could post little tidbits of game show history when they felt like it. Go ahead and use this thread for all historical references.

30 years ago today on January 5, 1987, the Bill Rafferty version of Blockbusters debuted on NBC. It wouldn't have as much success as the Cullen version, lasting only 17 weeks. The show was replaced by Classic Concentration in May of that year.

31 years ago today on Jan. 6, 1986, two game shows made their debuts: the Bob Eubanks version of Card Sharks on CBS, and Bruce Forsyth's Hot Streak on ABC. Card Sharks would run on CBS until March 1989 (and also one syndicated season with Bill Rafferty as host), while Hot Streak lasted only 13 weeks.

31 years ago today, Press Your Luck moved to 4:00 p.m. Most stations didn't carry it after the time change, and those that did either aired it as normal at 4:00 p.m. on the East Coast, or tape delayed it for the next morning. WABI-TV 5 in Bangor, Maine is the only CBS affiliate I know of that ran Press Your Luck as normal after the time change. It would be the last time CBS programmed the 4:00 p.m. timeslot, which they returned to the affiliates on September 29, becoming the last major network to do so.

I am wondering if Press Your Luck's cancellation and CBS downsizing the daytime game shows from four to three, and surrendering the 4:00 p.m.slot to the local affiliates may have resulted in the winnings limit being increased to $75,000? Maybe that explains the launch of the car game on Card Sharks one month afterwards.

35 years ago today on April 23, 1982, Blockbusters and Battlestars ended their runs on NBC, after a year and a half and half a year respectively.
Battlestars didn't have a chance. It was up against the second half of The Price Is Right, and was branded as a Hollywood Squares rip-off (same company, and some people called it "Hollywood Triangles"). Its second run as The New Battlestars in Spring 1983 didn't fare any better; it only lasted 13 weeks.
Blockbusters, on the other hand, I think was a different story. I think its ratings were fine; I mean the only competition it had was Alice reruns on CBS, and that didn't really threaten them that much. I think the reason Blockbusters was cancelled was because NBC needed to find a way to strengthen their struggling daytime soaps (The Doctors and Texas; they had already cancelled Password Plus). If that's true, the move didn't work as Texas struggled against The Price Is Right on CBS, and Family Feud on ABC proved to be too much for The Doctors. Both Soaps had their finales on New Year's Eve 1982.
Regardless of the reason, save for Wheel of Fortune, the rest of 1982 was a dry spell for daytime game shows on NBC. Fantasy doesn't really count, because 1) it was up against Guiding Light and General Hospital on CBS and ABC respectively in the 3:00 p.m. slot, and 2) it wasn't really a game show per se; it was a part GS, part human interest program. No, the day NBC game shows in the morning officially made a comeback was Monday January 3, 1983.
