I disliked Millionaire and the fact that it was still running [...] to the point where i wished ABC would cancel the show already. They did...back in 2002. They probably made a mistake there and was talking about the syndicated version I think. Because, yes ABC cancelled it in 2002. Although, Disney/ABC distributed the syndicated version from 2007 until they decided to cancel it. Unfortunately ABC ran the show to death in the prime time run, it got worn out on people and they had to cancel it. I think that was NBC's mistake with Deal or No Deal too. You have a successful show and you run it into the ground and it becomes overkill. I loved the prime time version of Millionaire though. It was the best, the game play, Regis, it was perfect to me. I liked the fastest finger questions. It makes me hope that ABC might revive the show, with the old format (minus the phone a friend, I mean you can quickly google answers nowadays, they did 20 years ago you could sometimes tell) probably with a different host though understandably, I mean, Regis is 87, who knows if they would want to hire him again and who knows if he'd be interested at his age.

Chris Harrison could host it if ABC ever did bring it back. Regis is pretty much retired.

Yeah, a couple of people had already beaten me to the punch but I was actually referring to the syndicated version of Millionaire, which aired its last new episode Friday.
Also, putting that to rest, not that I see the show returning anytime soon, but if it ever is, I strongly recommend they reintroduce the sit-down set. I liked it a lot better when they had the host and contestant sitting down rather than standing. I did watch a YouTube video on that and vaguely recall one of the show's producers saying the contestants think better when they're standing. I don't know that notion is medically proven or accurate or not, but I challenge that given the fact that all the successful top-prize winners played the game during the sit-down era of the show... and the show's last ever million-dollar-winner (from the American version anyway) was back in 2009.
I know players have reached the million-dollar question during the stand-up era but they didn't win it. Who's to say for sure what lead to Millionaire's demise? But even though i would've thought the fact the show hasn't seen a million-dollar winner since 2009 evoked ABC to end the show for good but I like phimat37's point that they'd been airing the show to death, which would've then caused its downfall.

I was actually referring to the syndicated version of Millionaire, which aired its last new episode Friday. I know that, but it seemed to me like you kept referring to it as if it aired on the ABC network, hence my reply. (Yes, I know the show's distributed by Disney-ABC.) the show's last ever million-dollar-winner (from the American version anyway) was back in 2009. Albeit through that stupid Tournament of Ten. The last person to properly win the game was Nancy Christy in May 2003. I know players have reached the million-dollar question during the stand-up era but they didn't win it. It gets worse than that - the last person to see a $1,000,000 question was in 2013, during Cedric the Entertainer's year as host. Who's to say for sure what lead to Millionaire's demise? Terrible ratings, question material that seemed to get harder the longer the show went on (this final season was especially bad), weekly promos that spoiled the most that would be won during said week, lousy clearances/timeslots, multiple stupid format changes (such as that damn Clock), and in the end the ABC O&O's opting for a talk show instead for 2019-20. But even though i would've thought the fact the show hasn't seen a million-dollar winner since 2009 evoked ABC to end the show for good Pretty sure the show saw that as a positive. It's clear they were trying everything they could to cut corners. but I like phimat37's point that they'd been airing the show to death, which would've then caused its downfall. Phimat was referring to the original 1999-2002 primetime series, which ABC did in fact overexpose.

The ABC primetime Millionaire relied on celebrities a bit too much in 2001-02, and ditched the phone game in favor of normal auditions. Those two things didn't sit so well with the online game show community. The latter was done in part to get more contestants who were not Caucasian males. Regis around 2000 on one episode of Millionaire hinted at the fact that they were looking for more contestant diversity. THe last primetime episode of WWTBAM in June 2002 was actually beaten in the ratings that night by a TPIR primetime special IIRC.

Gameshownewsnet.com reports that Millionaire will have a primetime run of an undisclosed number of episodes starting on April 8th on ABC in the wake of the show's 20th anniversary. Jimmy Kimmel will host, and the shows will have celebrities playing for charity, with a new lifeline allowing them to invite a guest into the Hot Seat. There will be a live, play-along app that will allow home viewers to play for the same amount of money the celebrates are playing for on the show. Jimmy Kimmel, Mike Richards, and Michael Davies will be the producers.

Tonight's episode with Jimmy Kimmel as the host of the celebrity version had something interesting happen that I don't think has ever happened before and shouldn't have been allowed to happen. The celebrity (forgot who it was) was going back and forth with her partner behind her during a $16,000 question. They were deciding on which answer to go with, but the celebrity contestant said her answer followed by "final answer". That answer lit up, but she was trying to stop them saying she meant to go with the other answer. The show went to a commercial and when it came back on, the judges decided to let her go with the other answer and it was correct, netting her $16,000 and allowing her to continue in the game. That shouldn't have happened. If that was a non-celebrity contestant, I'm 100% sure the judges wouldn't have allowed them to change their answer and they would've been locked into their guess after saying "final answer".
Game shows have rules. Contestants should know them and should follow them. If a contestant screws up on a game show, they should be punished for it. It's like those contestants on Wheel Of Fortune who add an "and" in the Crossword puzzle. The show has a rule that disallows the guess if an "and" or anything else is added. If you screw up, too bad. You should face the consequences for the blunder, but because this was a celeb playing for a charity, the judges decided to be nice. Good for the charity and the celeb, but I really don't like what happened here because you know very well that a regular contestant wouldn't have been so lucky here. You think that's fair to them? I don't think so. You can't just change the rules in the middle of the game just because a celebrity made a mistake with money for charity on the line. If they're allowed to have that do-over, then normal players should have that luxury as well. Just saying.

Final Answer means Final Answer, plain and simple.

Give the show back to someone who knows how to run it. Meredith Vieira.

The host is irrelevant to this discussion, it's the producers and S&P that make that call, not the host.

This already happened 16 years ago with this question during a Meredith episode: Denny's restaurants offer a signature breakfast dish named after what sports term? • A: Slam dunk • B: Touchdown • C: Knockout • D: Grand slam The answer was D, but the contestant accidentally said A and said it was her final answer. That time it was ruled incorrect and Meredith said, "Sorry, you said final answer."

Since there is no audience, I don't know why the powers that be just replaced the question and the program edited. Then no one would know about the fo pa made
